An oped last week in the CJ reported on parkland acreage, noting how well Louisville compares to other cities on the measure of greenspace -- one of the essential components of Quality of Place.
The perspective offered by the authors, Mike Heitz, Dan Jones, David Karem and Mimi Zinniel provided a fresh insight -- and a fresh method for measuring this important aspect of our community.
Recently released data from the Trust for Public Lands shows the total acres of parkland in the city of Louisville.

The GLP has traditionally used acres per capita -- another way to look at the picture.

From an “acres per capita” perspective, Louisville ranks 6th among peers; on total acres in the city, Louisville ranks 4th.
Just goes to show how sometimes one point of data illuminates the same picture in different ways, and sometimes one is preferable to another, although both are accurate and one could argue the merits of each.
Now that our own thinking has been illuminated, the GLP will consider this new metric suggested by parks leaders for next year’s report. Thanks for speaking up, Mike, Dan, David, and Mimi.
